Gus is an avid bicycle commuter with a 44-mile round-trip commute, was a
co-founder of the MSU Bike Project along with Terry Link, director of
Office of Campus Sustainability,
in 2002/ early 2003. Without Gus' vision and determination the Bike Project
wouldn't have evolved to become the MSU Bikes Service Center. His love of cycling and of getting things done
despite the odds (or byzantine rules/ regulations) continues to help propel MSU Bikes to new heights as the chair of the Advisory Committee.
Gus' home in Perry is about 20 miles from campus and since he prefers the
back roads, he clocks in at just under 22 miles each way. He says that's
just about right to have a good work out on the way to work in the morning
and to work out the stress of the day on the way home at night. Due to a
busy home life and other volunteer activities he can commute only on
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Gus was born & raised in Canada and has worked on cars and bikes his whole
life, so his mechanical skills have proved invaluable to the Project as
well. The Physical Plant's fleet of bicycles for their staff to make quick &
healthy runs on campus have been a shining example of how university units
can and should utilize bicycles to augment their campus work day. On
fair-weather days these bikes are so popular with staff that they're
apparently a challenge to secure.
Gus' near-miss with death thanks to a sturdy helmet has made him a big
proponent of helmet use. Gus is also a very active leader with his local Boy
Scout troop and other civic organizations and very adept with a bow & arrow!
Gus is also an avid enthusiast of organized bike tours; he has ridden the
DALMAC for many years and has toured extensively in North Carolina and Ohio. He also enjoys self-supported
tours and tries to work one in each summer. He averages about 3,000 per year
on his bikes.
