StolenBicycleRegistry.com Releases
MOBILE.STOLENBICYCLEREGISTRY.COM
StolenBicycleRegistry.com, a community-driven website for listing, tracking, and recovering stolen bicycles, announced today that their database is now searchable via cell phone at mobile.stolenbicycleregistry.com.
Bryan Hance, the programmer and biker behind StolenBicycleRegistry.com, said he created the new feature because the ability to search bike serial numbers ‘in the wild’ greatly increases the potential for recovering stolen bikes.
“StolenBicycleRegistry.com has had great recoveries because bikers are a very dedicated community, and they’re always on the lookout. I’ve been amazed at some of the bikes we’ve found,” said Hance. “I am always looking for better ways to find stolen bikes, and the mobile option is a no-brainer. Everybody has a cell phone, and every one of those phones can now be used to check a serial number in a matter of seconds. For free. That has great potential,” he said.
With the increase in stolen bikes being ‘chopped’ and resold via online auctions, Hance says it is imperative that the biking community be equipped with better tools to help fight the problem. “It’s an arms race, because online sales give thieves all the advantages – anonymity, multiple auction sites, payment at a distance, and so on – while bike theft victims are stuck hanging ‘Stolen Bike’ flyers in bike shops. So we need to up the ante, and I’m hoping the mobile search option tips the scales back in the right direction,” he said.
Anyone with a cell phone capable of mobile browsing can visit mobile.stolenbicycleregistry.com and check a bike’s serial number simply by providing their email address. The mobile.stolenbicycleregistry.com database searches for exact serial matches as well as ‘close’ matches and displays search results within seconds. If a person matches a bike reported as stolen, mobile.stolenbicycleregistry.com also sends a copy of the bike’s file to the person’s email address to help facilitate recovery.
