Campus Bike Programmers
1st Annual Conference
Nov. 1 ~2, 2008
Davis, CA
Does your campus have a growing bike program or are you just starting to plan one? Well, this is a meeting you won't want to miss and a network of campus bike programmers you need to join.
The first weekend in November we'll be gathering in the defacto Capitol of USA Bicycling, Davis, CA. Why Davis you ask? Well, Davis is a Platinum winner of the League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly Communities award (watch a great video about Davis & see why they got the award for yourself; our hosts Rober and David are interviewed as well), and is also known as the first city in the USA to install bike lanes as well as many other firsts for promoting safe bicycling. Read an in-depth article "Evolution of a Bicycle Friendly Community - the Davis Model" by David Takemoto-Weerts, UC Davis' Bicycle Program Coordinator, for an excellent reference on how to be true bike friendly community.

The UC Davis Bike Barn is the oldest university-operated bike program in the USA (maybe the world?) and is undoubtedly the busiest and most advanced. The Bike Barn's General Manager, Robert St. Cyr, has kindly assisted many other bike programs around the country over the years and, in the interest of helping coach more bike programmers, is loaning his support and coordination efforts to help make this conference a success. David Takemoto-Weerts, who will be presenting at the conference, is a nationally known advocate for bicycling, and is also helping out behind the scenes to make this happen.

This weekend was selected for our conference due to two other big bike events happening at Davis: 1st, the City of Davis is celebrating their Centennial with some very cool historical bike displays and programming, and 2nd, Davis is hosting the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for the Class of 2008 & banquet on Sun. Nov. 2nd. This will be the first time the induction ceremony will be held in the western United States. The keynote speaker will be none other than one of America's strongest (current) bike racers, Levi Leipheimer. The ceremony and banquet are also expected to attract many other big names in bicyling. Click here for more info. on the event and go here to register online for the HOF events ASAP (it's expected to fill up soon; registration will close in advance of the event) as well as links to hotels, transportation and other essential information for your visit.
